Giant No Longer a Value Brand? A Tale of Two Similar E-bikes, Two Years & $900 apart

Hello, I must show my ignorance or poor memory. Could you please explain BB bikes? Sorry to hear that EBikes are a rarity there. We're just south of Dallas and they are not common here either. We see one every hundred riders or so. The local shop guys tell me they are selling as fast as...

    Bolton kit for Rad

Hello All, I am looking at converting my AWOL Elite to an e-bike to keep in my office. Thinking of a hub motor. Not really sure of geared or direct drive. Suspect geared. Looking for advice/starting point on kits. Really want to have torque sensor. I search internet and find the supplier...

Giant No Longer a Value Brand? A Tale of Two Similar E-bikes, Two Years & $900 apart

Miscommunication on my part. I followed what you described. I was just commenting on the comedy of value engineering in my field and should have probably just left it out. Even I like a functional equivalent if less expensive and it still works well. When my kids were young, I had a 3-speed...

Giant No Longer a Value Brand? A Tale of Two Similar E-bikes, Two Years & $900 apart

thanks! I hear the 'value engineering' phrase in the building products industry all the time. Usually, it's from sales and marketing staff. We (chemists) keeps telling them that 'value engineering' is a synonym for 'failure in the field' and 'lawsuit.' This is all interesting when thinking...

Giant No Longer a Value Brand? A Tale of Two Similar E-bikes, Two Years & $900 apart

Thanks! what you have described is more in keeping with how we use loss leaders. I just couldn't see it with an e-bike. The halo vehicle is a term new to me but I have encountered the reality when a dealership parked a Porsche 911 in the showroom next to the VW Rabbit I wanted. I thought...

Giant No Longer a Value Brand? A Tale of Two Similar E-bikes, Two Years & $900 apart

I have a really stupid question. We have loss leaders in our product lines in my industry. We sell one part of a set of products at a loss that is really attractive to the customer and make our money on the 'accessories' that go into that set or with that particular item. How does that work in...

Giant No Longer a Value Brand? A Tale of Two Similar E-bikes, Two Years & $900 apart

Hey gang, It seems like this pricing pattern goes into the Explore models. My wife and I bought our 2020 models in late 2019 for $2500. I love looking at what everyone in the industry is doing and charging. Sometime late 2020 the Explore had been 'upgraded' with downgraded components...

Never a truer statement. I have yet to see an e-bike that I don't fleetingly think 'I want one of those'. Hub drives, mid-drives, diamond frame, step-through, fat tire, internal gearing, belt drive and on and on. Even worse, it's really hard to part with a ride, even a bad one. I couldn't...

    Reducing Weight on Arthritic Hands

Hey Gang, way back in mid-70's I saw a guy that not only reversed his quill stem but installed a set of reversed 'butterfly' handlebars. He tilted them back so far that the grip ends were sticking almost straight up. Looked a lot like the tiller on a small boat. He just couldn't reach any...

    Ride Control Firmware

The ultimate comment on my experiments...keeping the cadence up above 60 rpm does get the Auto Assist to work very similarly to 'out of the box'. However, there are still some conditions where I catch the system not keeping up. It is just often enough to make it something you can't ignore...

First Trip To The Grocery Store

Hello and Thanks! I will look at a set of the Wald baskets for my wife's machine. She is not a big fan of panniers but she does like to run to the grocery, etc. She's not fond of having to unfasten, unroll, load, reroll and refasten. I think she would like the bungee cord or net arrangement...

First Trip To The Grocery Store

We use the Giant branded adjustable stand that mounts well rear of the pedals. It was easy to get when we bought our bikes. Far better than the single strut stands that mount just aft of the crank. I had read a couple of complaints about the center stands being fragile and prone to tipping...

First Trip To The Grocery Store

Hey guys, Just a thought here...have had success with Thule panniers. I think three sizes available. When I have ice cream and milk or meat, they handle crushed ice very well. These keep the load pretty low. Very durable. Stay virus-free.

    Ride Control Firmware

Hello, all of my success has been due to riders responding through EBR. I had no success with Giant. My LBS did get some feedback from Giant that led to their reloading and calibrating everything AND recommending that the bike be ridden 'more aggressively'. I have never been sure what that...

    Ride Control Firmware

A penultimate comment on Giant Firmware experiments...Continued efforts to keep rpm up above about 60 rpm AND get the Auto Assist to work properly continue to be successful. I don't quite have everything down to being 'instinctive' gear changing but, so long as keep my mind on what I am doing...

Great! If I face another update in the future I will give this a try. Thanks!

    Ride Control Firmware

Hello Skytech, I am not very good at the electronic stuff but this is what other suggested... Get as close to your 'router' as you can. Your cell phone signal strength indicator doesn't seem to be useful. Get close. Start the update but stand there and intermittently tap the up or down buttons...

    Ride Control Firmware

A continuation. After only 32 km at 60-63 rpm it does seem that the Auto Assist is working very similarly to how it operated 'right out of the box'. I think the 'surginess' might be related to variations in my cadence combined with variations in the applied force (from me). The lags I have...

    Ride Control Firmware

Hello, A question(s) for everyone before I start on an experiment. A couple of riders have noted the need to reach 60 rpm in order for the Auto Assist to change assist levels. I am usually a bit less than that. To the point... Is this a noticeable thing once you get to 60 rpm or more? Do the...
