Are you going to ride in snow?

Sub-zero temps have me off the bike for some time now. Looks like -17C coming up (or down) for the next weekend. Have taken up bread baking as well as wood carving for the next little while.

    Winter Cycle gloves/Overshoes

If you do get the wrong size, I find their service to be very responsive. My heated socks developed a seam opening inside the toe and the wires were bothersome. They sent a new pair straight away, complete with batteries, only asking for a photo.

    Winter Cycle gloves/Overshoes

I found the sizing chart to be very accurate. I would have expected my size to be a large, but based on the measurement I went with extra large, and they are an excellent fit.

    Big Specialized price increase

Can we likely expect similar moves from Trek, Giant, Cannondale?

What’s your winter ebike-related project you’re working on?

That’s why they advise to turn the rim and measure different rotations of the same spot, i.e. the valve.

What’s your winter ebike-related project you’re working on?

No, I just got it and there’s no rush with below freezing temps and lots of snow. The bike isn’t shifting smoothly in all gears, and I suspect the hanger got bent when I destroyed the original derailleur with a stick on a trail some time ago. Park has a good video on how to use it.

What’s your winter ebike-related project you’re working on?

The hangers are designed to me more malleable/easy to bend than the frame and derailleur they are attached to, to help limit damage to other components. As such, they are made so they can usually be bent back into the same plane as the cassette. The tool for this screws into the hole where you...

What’s your winter ebike-related project you’re working on?

I am gradually building up a collection of bike servicing tools over the fall and winter, mostly Park brand. My Trek dealer is well over an hour away and even more inaccessible with Covid restrictions. Before winter set in, I was averaging about 1000 km per month, so maintenance needs are fairly...

Anyone figured out a chain ring protection option for pant cuffs?

My bike came with one of those, suitable for a commuter bike. But I have had to deal with chain issues numerous times in my off-road riding, and it made access to the chain overly complicated. Much better with the circular guard I now have installed.

What Do You Do During The Lockdown?

Our Prime Minister excels at virtue signaling. Very early on, they failed to stop flights from China because that would be “racist”. Unbelievable. Since then, it’s been one misstep after another, starting with sending a huge volume of our PPE to China and then cooperating with a vaccine...

Good work down under! Our governments in Canada are making a complete disaster worse.

What Do You Do During The Lockdown?

Started a new lockdown project... a carved pub sign for the garden shed which already has a carved bird in the hand tree stump sculpture in front of it.

How On Earth Are Small Bike Companies Going to Continue?

I was very fortunate to get a Trek here in Canada, in the size I wanted, right away last July. I have been tempted to add a Powerfly FS4... my Trek dealer has 2 small frame ones in stock. I now think I will just stick with mine. I have upgraded it steadily, but realize some parts are in short...

Are you going to ride in snow?

I’m really envious of the trail system you have in Red Deer! It’s very hit and miss in my town in southwestern Ontario. Fortunately I live in a wooded neighborhood where vehicle traffic is light and not fast moving. Getting closer to the highway or downtown, you want to make sure your traction...

    Winter Cycle gloves/Overshoes

The Saviour gloves really do fit... well, like a glove after a few uses. I find no difficulty with gear or brake levers.

    Winter Cycle gloves/Overshoes

Keen insulated boots here lately. I was using my Dubarry sailing boots with heated socks, but the Keen boots have better tread when walking the bike. And they’re warmer.

    Winter Cycle gloves/Overshoes

I second the recommendation for Saviour heated gloves... they are excellent, very well made, and provide good warmth to the fingers. I have also been using their heated socks. While not as well made as the gloves, they have worked pretty well. I often ride in temperatures at or just below freezing.
