Please stop charging ebike batteries overnight!

Next time you find some anecdotal smart phone research on the internet, you should put on your thinking cap and ask yourself if applies to e-bikes. Cadex tested cells, not batteries. A battery is cells in series. If my bikes were powered by single cells like smart phones, smart phone research...

Under it all, I love a Bell Air Attack floor pump that I bought locally 25 years ago. The hassle was the lack of a gauge. I'd have to get on my knees to disconnect the pump and check the pressure, then probably get back up to pump. Amazon and youtube get swamped with Chinese lies. The problem...

Please stop charging ebike batteries overnight!

How could balancing cause an increase in watts? Suppose I have a battery with 3 columns of 13 cells in series. I'll round the fully charged voltage down to 52, or 4 volts per cell. A 2-amp charger would use 156 watts (nominally) to deliver 2/3 amp per column. (For AC I prefer to measure watts...

    Thinking real hard on this...

In 5th grade I had a still in the basement to make ethanol as fuel. I tried it and didn't like it. The possibility of a spill and the nearly invisible flame made it a fire hazard. Anyway, production wasn't efficient. My parents would have become suspicious if I'd built a wood fire in the...

Are white reflectors required on wheels

PA requires side reflectors after sundown. I guess reflective tires would do the trick.

I assume that when the BMS is supplying current to undercharged cells, it will show up in input (AC) watts. Normally, when the charger shows a green light, the input is about 1 watt. If the watt meter reads much more, I assume the BMS is topping off low cells.

Mine is mechanical. Previously you said you use a double-pole to isolate the battery from the charger. That sounds complex. I don't know, but I imagine both the battery and the charger would have semiconductors to prevent "backflow." I log the voltage before and after charging and use that...

    Thinking real hard on this...

In grade school I took Sterno on hikes. There was plenty of heat for soup or a hot drink, and I'd put it out by putting the cover back on the can. At 12 I spent $1.57 for a 5" Schrade H15 and sheath. The quality impressed me. Sixty years later I found out that that it's the no-frills version of...

I bought this one 10 months ago to bring me home in case of a flat. I liked it so much that I quit using my compressor with the 25-foot hose. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0C1BYLWBC When it was new, I tested it on a 20 x 3.3. I think it took about 5 minutes from 0 to 30 PSI. To test the...

Schwalbe recommends against tubeless tires for most riders. Modern Bike lists 20 tubeless tires for 20" rims, but the only one wider than 2.4 inches is 4 inches.

Can you find a tubeless rim for @sc00ter 's 20 x 3 tire? The rim has to have the correct width, whatever it may be. Tubeless will let you run at lower pressure off road. On a road bike, it has a little less friction and is less likely to blow out. These considerations don't seem to count for an...

    Flat tires

In my experience from the 60s, it took something like a nail or a screw to penetrate the casing. I could usually see it from the outside, and it was a cinch to find the hole in the tube. In my experience since 2020, a penetrating object may be small enough to hide in the carcass. If I don't find...

    Flat tires

I used to be concerned. Then I noticed that my punctures these days are too small to deflate a tire in under 10 minutes. I also found that a rechargeable pump that will inflate a bicycle tire too many times to count, will fit in a coat pocket. Unless I get an unusually big hole, I can patch it...

    Electric Bike vs. Regular Bike

Riding from home, I usually ride a block east and turn right. The next 500 yards is uphill and there's usually a headwind. A mill wall along the street catches and intensifies any wind. If there's any wind, I'll need motor assistance with my single-speed. With my 7-speed, I may do it with no...

It looks challenging to hinge 3 legs at the top with no wiggle. I have three tripods that did it with a single casting at the top.

I have used a bucket. First I have to locate an empty one. Then I have to turn it over to clean the bottom. If I sit long, the ridges will be pretty uncomfortable. As the photo shows, my collapsible seat hangs by a door, and it has no ridges. Photos show the collapsible at 11 and 18 inches...

    collapsible stool

Here are three I tried. The white one is a plastic chair with a 17" height. After an arm broke, I cut off the arms and back. I use it for changing to and from chore boots on the porch, but it's usually a little big and high for working on a bike. The second is a 15" bench. The third is a 10"...

Inner tubes. Our friend AND enemy.

My punctures are often on seams, which makes it harder to buff for a patch. With my Radrunner 20 x 3.3 tires, I got a pinch flat for the first time in my life. I wondered if I'd really been that careless with levers. I got my answer when I bought new tubes in 2022. I discovered that the OEMs...

    collapsible stool

Airing bicycle tires was a hassle. On a car or truck, the valve will be nearly a foot off the ground even at 6 o'clock. With one hand, I could shove the chuck hard to seat it. On a bicycle, shoving hard with one hand will move the wheel unless it's at 6 o'clock, which is very low. Sitting on the...
