Winter riding on the Zen Photon.

It is a carbide, not steel (studs). Carbide is one of the hardest materials on Earth (only diamond is harder). User @Prairie Dog often showed his rides on Spiker Pros on a frozen pond in AB, CA :)

Should I Buy A Pedal Wrench?

The valve holes (two of them) have a way bigger diameter than the spoke holes, hence higher stress. If you don't know what a double wall bike rim with reinforced spoke holes is, just think what crap you are riding :D

Do you really need to torque a through axle?

Yes Chris, I know. The MTB style, certainly a very good one. Not the QR axle for a skewer with drop-outs :) P.S. These thru-axles are usually more expensive than the regular ones. Once you rotate the handle to the same position (usually it is vertically! so the clamp cannot open by hitting a...

Do you really need to torque a through axle?

@indianajo are you talking about thru-axles? Are you sure? A thru-axle. Not your usual QR axle.

Should I Buy A Pedal Wrench?

I ride US$4-5k e-bikes. Good rims have their spoke holes reinforced.

Excuse my heresy and please help, need advice from the fat tire crowd.

I would be more interested to hear how much you're riding nowadays and how come most of the cyclists on this planet do not ride fat bikes. Did you ride your 112,000 miles on fat bikes? Does my 45,000 km ridden over 5 years on e-bikes (not fat e-bikes), age 58-63 count?

Should I Buy A Pedal Wrench?

The smaller the holes in the double wall rim are the better for reducing the stress caused by the holes in the otherwise solid rim. Presta has the smallest diameter of all bike valves. That's it.

Should I Buy A Pedal Wrench?

Any good double wall bicycle rim (from road through gravel bike to MTB) in the world is made for Presta. Schrader is for automotive purposes. Perhaps because motorbikes, cars or aeroplanes are slightly bigger. Now wonder why one e-bike is three grand and another can be had for fifteen hundred 😁

Should I Buy A Pedal Wrench?

Only you won't find Schrader on premium bikes

It's not easy to find appropriate ones. These shall have a membrane inside but even that does not guarantee warm hands under wet weather. I've standardized on the German brand Chiba. I wear: Bioxcell Light Winter at 4-10 C and above Bioxcell Warm Winter at 0-4 C Alaska Pro for the frost. Not...

Do you really need to torque a through axle?

As I say, it does not need to be that accurate. The role of the thru-axle is to squeeze the fork sockets on the hub bearings. It is enough to apply as much torque as the axle doesn't loosen itself. Your 11 Nm torque wrench is adequate. If you need a good one, I use this torque wrench myself...

Winter riding on the Zen Photon.

I greatly agree with you. I would say deep snow is a fat-bike territory. I was fond of Ice Spiker Pro on my 2.6" e-MTB, and they rule on ice! Indeed, these are not best for the snow. I use Schwalbe Marathon Winter Plus on my regular e-bikes during real winter. These ensure safe riding on ice...

    TQ motor

The only genuinely silent e-bike motors were Specialized 1.2E, 1.2, and 1.2s by Brose, sadly discontinued. Please listen to the third part of this video.

Before he says it, let it be known @MartsEbike rode for 116 km/1480 m (72 mi/4,855 ft) on his Vado SL yesterday! At 3 C, dark, and in strong wind! Kudos kudos kudos!!! As we say in Poland: 'I can't recognize my mate!' :D Martin: Please tell me about the assistance you used on the ride!

Do you really need to torque a through axle?

In my experience, 10-12 Nm is enough. If you take a regular 6 mm hex wrench, hold it 1/3rd length (counting from the axle), and use the usual hand force, it is enough to tighten the axle properly. If it is the 6 mm hex bit of the multi-tool, use the full length of the tool to achieve the same...

Excuse my heresy and please help, need advice from the fat tire crowd.

Hundreds of thousand cyclist ride fast descents on potty roads every single day. You must be blind not to notice a deep pothole. How many thousand of miles have you ridden this year? (I'm approaching 5,000 and including two e-bike races). How often do you ride downstairs? I even won't waste...
