People for Bikes: Progress on Ebike Laws in the US

the rental restrictions start 2028, not 2026.

benno 46er - anyone got one?

thinking about a small cargo bike to carry myself and a ±60lb child up steep hills. anyone have the 46er? seems like an interesting and very compact approach to the problem! another option is the specialized/globe haul st, but it's heavier, hub drive, battery not integrated, and maybe longer.

People for Bikes: Progress on Ebike Laws in the US

aha!! the version i saw on legiscan was not current. nonetheless, there is absolutely nothing which defines an electric bicycle as having a certified/tested battery. it simply says, over and over again, that you cannot SELL a vehicle with an uncertified battery in 2026, or rent one in 2028...

People for Bikes: Progress on Ebike Laws in the US

did you actually read the thing? this seems like fear mongering based on nothing that’s in the actual legislation. maybe i’m missing something?!? each of the provisions of 26301 starts “A person shall not distribute, sell, lease, or offer for sale or lease an electric bicycle unless….” i see...

People for Bikes: Progress on Ebike Laws in the US

still not sure how/why. are you saying it’s going to be really hard to test/certify a battery? the majority of the population of california lives nowhere near (like hundreds of miles from) the border. i don’t think people from san francisco or los angeles are hitting up LBS in reno and las...

People for Bikes: Progress on Ebike Laws in the US

i‘m curious what the objections are. limiting throttle to 20mph? or that by making throttled bikes class 2, they’ll be banned more places? or 750w (which is really more like 900+ since its mechanical power, not input/electrical.)

EBR made me do it! (new Vado SL 5.0 EQ)

despite the lack of a meaningful underdrive in general (MTB excepted) the fact that the motor doesn’t ever have to spin so fast (since as you note it’s generally overdriven by 2-4 times!) means the internal gearing can be designed differently, in essence more underdriven, reducing a very very...

    interesting new garmin radar data

the effective use of the varia has nothing to do with turns across traffic. it has to do with alerting drivers approaching from the rear to your presence and alerting you to their presence without requiring you to take your eyes off the road ahead. a mirror cannot do either of these things...

    Trouble getting accurate calorie data

definitely something awry with the 7+ hour one. in the second one the moving time is 2.25 hours, so 2.25 x 49 x 4 is pretty close to 434. average power is averaged over moving time, not elapsed time. the fact that the work (kilojoules) is correct in the first one but the calories are not is...

    interesting new garmin radar data

i will amend - any cyclist who ever rides their bicycle on a surface shared with vehicles. because someone may ride on a velodrome, or singletrack, does not mean those users don’t ride on roads. i have known cyclists my entire life, have lived my entire life in one of the world’s cycling meccas...

    interesting new garmin radar data

hundreds of thousands - and probably millions of far more skilled and experienced riders disagree with your intellectually sloppy categorization. that a safety aid doesn’t help with ALL situations does not mean it doesn’t help with SOME. helmets don’t protect you from breaking a leg when you...

    Trouble getting accurate calorie data

it’s very accurate - lots and lots of studies show that the efficiency of human bodies in turning food energy into mechanical power on a bike sits in a narrow range. heart rate is not really relevant, it’s only used as a proxy for effort when power data is not available. the work you’re doing is...

    Trouble getting accurate calorie data

what does the power data say? using an average watts multiplied by time multiplied by approx 4 (the efficiency factor of the human body when cycling) is a very reliable estimate of calories burned - far, far more reliable than heart rate. one possibility is that the roam isn't getting your...

    Advanced ebikes vs CREO 2

interesting bike. much more powerful motor, slightly larger battery. unfortunately i’d have a hard time trusting a manufacturer who doesn’t put the geometry of a road or gravel bike somewhere on their website. it’s not in the spec sheets either!

    interesting new garmin radar data

many here know that i consider the varia a must-have accessory for any cyclist, far more important than any other safety measure except the helmet. it is the only active safety measure available, changing it's very bright rear facing blinking light pattern in response to approaching cars...
