    TQ motor

thanks, hadn’t seen the “silence” before. powering the electronic shifting via the main battery is long overdue! very nice looking bike.

Sometimes you find the best tools because they are not for bikes.

for bikes with very low torque fastener specs (carbon etc) the beam type really isn’t appropriate. way too long a lever arm on most of them and you typically go waaaaay past the spec with even the slightest push. i have a couple lexivon torque wrench socket handles, 1/4 and 3/8, for larger...

    The Tariff Questions?

the only way so “few” people spend a lot of money is by simply giving it to other people… which is the vast majority of federal spending. the only way you really significantly cut federal spending is by reducing or eliminating medicare, medicaid, social security, and maybe national defense...

    The Tariff Questions?

yep, super bloated. significantly less than 40 years ago. 4% of the population. try again, use some facts this time!

    The Tariff Questions?

as someone who pays hundreds of thousands of dollars in taxes every year, i know full well where most of it goes : “aid” to support less “privileged” people, often in red state america. i’m sure you know that, for example, for every $1 mississippi residents pay in federal taxes they get $2.50 or...

    The Tariff Questions?

so you don’t care if you pay 5% tax (tariff) or 50%? good to know, will be sure to let the IRS in on this fact. the fact that a framework for taxing imports exists is a meaningless data point. of course it does. what is meaningful is HOW MUCH the taxes are, and what’s done with the proceeds...

The ebike gods have smiled on me — the water heater gods, yes and no.

our previous garage /parking space had a bit of a drainage issue - it was adjacent to the ramp down into the basement level, and sufficient water on the sidewalk would trickle in and make its way diagonally across the back of the space to A local low point. of course it doesn’t rain for 7-9...

    The Tariff Questions?

most likely, depending on the rules of origin. just putting together a bunch of parts in one place does not make it manufactured in that place. the most expensive parts of an e-bike are probably the battery, then motor, then frame. for a high end non-e bike it would probably be the frame, then...

Vado SL 2 Carbon LTD premiered today!

Probably not legal on a tarmac, but on an aethos anything goes. But don’t worry, when I’m not riding it to work i do wear cycling shorts (Rapha cargo shorts) and technical tops which are fitted, but not skin tight. I don’t really understand the point of “bibs” or pockets in the back of my shirt...

EBR made me do it! (new Vado SL 5.0 EQ)

i don’t think it has a name, but used very commonly. for serious road cyclists 100 feet per mile over a long ride is where rides start to get “hard,” becuase of course you also have to go down. assuming you’re going up half the time and down half the time, that’s about 4% for half the ride...

Vado SL and Vado SL 2 assist levels

a good discussion of what’s different between the 1.1 and 1.2 motors. the primary hardware bits are very similar if not identical: https://www.emtbforums.com/threads/mahle-sl-1-1-to-sl-1-2-whats-possible-and-whats-different.33882/

Visualizing and exploring the power-sensing PAS in Specialized mid-drives — an interactive graphical model

the presence of the additional “ramp” parameter on the SL MTBs leads me to believe that they also use cadence as an additional term to control the rate of change in power. of course rider power itself takes cadence into account but it’s possible to obtain pretty high power standing on the pedals...

EBR made me do it! (new Vado SL 5.0 EQ)

so great to read this post, and that level of fitness at 76 is a real accomplishment, new bike or not! kudos! there are many reasons to cycle, but i am pretty convinced that if your main reason is “fun” or “exercise” or “mental health” or “health” then less is absolutely more when it comes to...

Visualizing and exploring the power-sensing PAS in Specialized mid-drives — an interactive graphical model

the mtb guys have pretty thoroughly dissected these mahle motors. the torque sensor is on the drive side of the crank shaft, and my guess is that they have to do some electronic tomfoolery to account for motor power vs rider power when the motor is on, since that same shaft drives the chainring...

Vado SL 2 Carbon LTD premiered today!

yes, you hit the nail on the head. people grossly underestimate the increased power needed at speeds over 20mph from the bad aerodynamics (and to a lesser degree, tire rolling resistance) of upright bicycles. it's almost impossible to find "flat" land here without wind (since the flat land is...

    Any Ebike light battery recommended?

its a nice kickstand, but still a detriment to the clean lines of your yellow Vado! useful, absolutely! my commuter with child seat sports one as well, as does my daughter’s Sirrus. I am working on a custom project and looking into a cargo style stand, symmetrical, and under the chainstays, in...

Inner tubes. Our friend AND enemy.

why would you buy a tube from lectric? they obviously don’t make them, they don‘t say who makes them, they don’t describe them in any way, and appear to charge several times the cost of a quality tube from a known, reputable manufacturer.

    Any Ebike light battery recommended?

there are no good looking kickstands. for some types of bikes they are a necessary evil. the symmetrical ones for cargo bikes look better, potentially, but heavy and don’t fit most bikes.
