Input for long range commuter build?

Something potentially interesting entered the stage. Would any of you gentlemen have anything to say for or against a motor named MXUS XF40-30H ?

Input for long range commuter build?

Thanks for the info! 👍 Just spotted though that their cassette wheel is 145 mm wide and my bike is 135. No question it can be spread 10 mm by force, but I would be hesitant to apply that constant bending force to tubes and welds in addition to everything else it will have to take.

Input for long range commuter build?

Yes I am sure they are but just the combination that I am after seem hard to find. Rear DD cassette 750-1000 W, 700C, branded, preferably in EU but beggars can't be choosers. That one I will have to look at, thanks! Regular dropouts, no thru axle. Haven't heard of "Pasion" though.

Input for long range commuter build?

Speed bump. Just found out that Ebikeling rear wheels are only available for freewheel, not cassette. The dedicated bike, because of Murphy, has 9-speed cassette. I am told that 9-speed freewheels are generally sketchy in terms of material and wear - so that put me off getting one of those. And...

Input for long range commuter build?

So, motor torque... As finding a single supplier for the conversion kit I [think that I] want - rear wheel direct drive 48V 750-1000W - is less straight forward than I thought it would be, I am right now looking at Ebikeling. Their 1200 W kit is appealing but the motor is speced only 30 Nm -...

Input for long range commuter build?

Yes, I have used that simulator and also the trip simulator to verify performance against my needs. Several motors meet them, but I find it a challenge locating European sellers. Buying a kit from Grin or eBikeling overseas is an option but not top of my list because of added customs, taxes and...

Input for long range commuter build?

I have not yet found a complete ebike that meets my wishes, and those that come anywhere close start around $5000. There is a reason this thread is in the DIY and kits section. ;)

Input for long range commuter build?

From my present design choices I am looking for a kit with a 28" rear wheel motor, somewhere around 750 W and as weatherproof as I can get it, from any of the major brands. Preferably a direct drive motor, otherwise a geared one but I am still not convinced about gears for 25-28 mph continously...

Input for long range commuter build?

The victim has been chosen. A bit of TLC on the brakes and a new chain, then on to electrification.

Input for long range commuter build?

I understand your point. But doubling the 40-45 minutes for the 30 km one way commute means way too much time on the road than I am willing to spend. If I can't go at least 25 mph it is simply not going to happen. Commuting by car is not free of risk either, and certainly not by motorcycle...

Input for long range commuter build?

I was unclear; I did not mean to say that boundaries are unknown but rather that the knowledge of the limits would in this case come from Grin empirically probing them rather than from manufacturer's specs.

Input for long range commuter build?

@ m@Robertson, I much appreciate the input and realize that my demands may overshoot my budget. There may be some adjusting on both. :) I do intend to put in leg power but I need to keep those expectations realistic especially in the beginning. At the same time I need for this to work so well...

Input for long range commuter build?

Thanks for that input! Because of the parts issue mentioned, and compatibility with controllers etc, I hope to be able to decide on as common motor as possible. @indianajo , I will not need to stop-and-go at all between home and work, and no need to keep the battery on the bike when I leave it...

Input for long range commuter build?

Happy to hear. One thing that feels a bit insecure is that actual performance specs for motors often seem(?) to derive from empirical trial-and-error user experiences rather than from manufacturer's documentation. Meaning that if I aim for, say, a +50% performance (power, temp, voltage, rpm...

Input for long range commuter build?

Thanks for the input, that sounds more reassuring than I had hoped for. :) I find it difficult to get a feel for how much drag a gearless motor would make in real life but maybe a geared motor would be best after all, not least because of its size. I can live with a faint hiss sound if that...

Input for long range commuter build?

Having gathered information for some time I just recently found out about this forum that appears like THE ebike forum - especially for DIY which is not a big thing in my neck of the woods. :) I am considering swapping diesel for pedals, for commuting 30 km one way. That will not happen without...
