Commute bike 12 miles Marin to SF, hilly

Thanks @George S. - that site was helpful, primarily because I learned that by turning the crank back 1/8 turn I could stop the motor to shift. Easy! I had an AWESOME dirt commute to work last week: https://www.strava.com/activities/506281797 Getting a little frustrated with Luna cycle...

Commute bike 12 miles Marin to SF, hilly

@PowerMe - you nailed it. Today's commute over the GGB was nothing short of awesome. Classic SF weather, blue sky with a thin stream of fog across the bridge. Total commute time was 40 minutes, on a normal bike it's an hour. Updates: I put the Likiliki chain ring up front, replacing the...

Commute bike 12 miles Marin to SF, hilly

OK here it is! I've had some smiles and some frowns building this baby. Basics: Marin Palisades 2012 hardtail 29er with BBSHD and 52V Luna Shark pack 13.5 amphr battery. Smiles first: big smile during my commute to work on Friday. Here's the Strava segment. 13.3 miles, 1200 feet of...

Commute bike 12 miles Marin to SF, hilly

Thanks @Ravi Kempaiah - I added the hydraulic e-brakes sensor to my kit for $9, I'm hoping the kit comes with e-brakes that adapt to the hydraulic sensor; the BBS02 kit clearly shows them but the BBSHD kit does not. I have hydraulic brakes, just need the sensor and e-brake levers I think...

@Ravi Kempaiah - bingo. That's what I'm after. Though I hope I have better luck with my hydraulic e-break set up!

Also interested in recs for tubeless. I run tubeless on my MTB and road bike. Agree @Logan Gogarty it's the best.

Commute bike 12 miles Marin to SF, hilly

@Logan Gogarty - that is an awesome commuter build! That's what I'm talking about. Thanks for the tip about brake and bike maintenance. I have hydraulic disc brakes. I assume I'll have to pay close attention to chain health as well. Question - I'm starting to purchase parts for the...

Thanks for all the responses! @flymeaway - understood about lack of torque sensing in DIY. Maybe it's not as big a deal as I thought it might be. @George S. - like the 16th century analogy. Things are moving so fast in this industry, it's like we're in the industrial revolution but compacted...

I tested a Cannondale Movaro yesterday. I wanted to try a mid-drive system, and this was a shop I could get to easily on my drive home. Eh. Being limited to 20mph before the motor cuts out is VERY annoying. I get there in about 15 seconds, then I'm pedaling a 55lb bike without assistance...

Did you try lightly sanding the rotors on the disk breaks? Worked for my squeaky mountain bike.

Thanks for all the replies! @Ravi Kempaiah @George S. - ah! So at 14% I didn't test the ST2 at full strength. More reason to return for another test. It was lively even at 14% (except on hills). @RoyL and @flymeaway - good to hear the BBs02 is so quiet. Thanks for the pictures and the...

Commute bike 12 miles Marin to SF, hilly

I test rode on part of my commute. Today I rode 1. Turbo S - fast! quick to 20mph, easily hit 27 and felt the motor cut as I pushed to 28. A little weird with motor cutting in and out there, but safe. Climbed very well, easy to maintain 15-20mph on a 400ft climb. Power 48% to 24%. Link...

Commute bike 12 miles Marin to SF, hilly

@Jack Tyler - thanks for the suggestion! That is a nice youtube video. The addition of shift sensing does seem important on a mid-drive, and lack of such appears to be one of the drawbacks of the BBs02 and BBSHD. Cost is more, but you get what you pay for. @Ravi Kempaiah - wow! That's...

Thanks Allen, it's helpful to know that quiet mid-drive bikes exist, and can climb! I hadn't considered the Optibike, I'll look into it.

Thanks Pxpaulx, 86 and kicking, JoePah, and George S for your replies! I had not seriously considered the DIY route. Now that you mention it, I'm looking at Luna Cycle, at the Bafang BBS02 and BBSHD. The power, the power, the power! It certainly would help me accomplish my goal of getting...

Commute bike 12 miles Marin to SF, hilly

Hi, I'm a newbie to this forum. I've read through so please forgive if this has been answered and I missed it. I live in Marin CA and commute to SF, about 12-13 miles one way. I'm the sweatiest person I know. I'm tired of having to change (wake->home clothes->bike...
