Winter Is Coming - Biking in Cold Weather

Sharing a Pic friend of mine from Quebec sent me: I don't think fat tires are gonna work either. And you shouldn't need a translation...

Winter Is Coming - Biking in Cold Weather

Hey Art, That is in fact in an area called Confluence Park. It's just north of Beddington Trail and just east of Centre street. It runs along the Nose Creek Pathway system, which goes quite a ways west, but also links up with the pathways that go south all the way to 22X, and north to the big...

Winter Is Coming - Biking in Cold Weather

Calgary was pretty sketchy today - and I drive a 4 wheel drive Volvo Wagon with new winter tires. Main routes were OK'ish, but anything else was very, very, slippery. Twice I stopped at a traffic light well back of the vehicle in front of me, thus giving me some room to get the heck out of the...

Winter Is Coming - Biking in Cold Weather

Nose hill was been unrideable for those that care about trail conditions. Just too soft. However, a fresh dump of snow is underway and then it will be followed by some severe cold for a few days. So the base will be rebuilt and hardened over the next week, so riding should be good again soon...

Winter Is Coming - Biking in Cold Weather

One of the benefits around here, is although we get the cold, we rarely get the wet. Art @Prairie Dog, just 150 Kms to the north, gets more moisture than we typically do here and also tends to be a few degrees colder. I personally choose to not ride when it's much colder than -10C but I've...

Metric/Imperial Centuries? Poll, and your experience.

On my current ride, a FS eMTB, I can't see an Imperial. The few times I've done 70Km+, it's really been time that got in the way of making it to 100, but really the wrong bike for really long distances. In recollection though, I am sure I had a few Centuries on my analog 21 speed in my younger...

Best Rock Ever? Nominations, No Air Supply!

I'm rather partial to this one. But his repertoire is so deep it's ridiculous. In Brian May's tribute video, he was quoted as saying “I couldn’t pick up a guitar when he was in the room”. Yeah, I was a fan.

2023 - Our Rides in Words, Photos, Maps and Videos

1st ride of the year. Yeah, got the studded tires on. A casual 30km, some of which was up on the local hill. Without suspension, would probably have rattled a few fillings out. Must have been an epic day skiing west of here in Banff. Wishing everyone a safe and prosperous 2023.

    Bike related Christmas gifts

I got an ultra-sonic bath cleaner for Christmas this year. No excuse for dirty chains, cassettes and other stuff now - and they're going to get dirty, We're back to riding weather but it's going to be sloppy. Winter wheels back on (love the 2nd set of wheels - 3 minutes to swap both).

    weather forecast

Brave man. I haven't ridden in quite a while as I'm still recovering from Pneumonia. Bypassed cold, flu, RSV, Covid and went straight to Pneumonia. Weird. Cold air, even for a few seconds, drives me into an intense coughing fit. It's currently -26C so nope... When I do get out (perhaps on...

    Crash today on black ice

Schwalbe Ice Spiker Pros are pretty good, but there's many choices out there. I have them for both my bikes - I wouldn't ride in the winter without. Noisy as all heck, but amazing grip.

Winter Is Coming - Biking in Cold Weather

We're only minus -20C right now, but forecast is back up to +6C for Sunday. It's bloody November for crying out loud! Grrr (or is that Brrr)

Winter Is Coming - Biking in Cold Weather

I love riding in the winter - my local trails are quiet and as long as it's packed down and not too cold, it's a great way to deal with our seasons here. To be honest, I'd rather be downhill skiing, but certain leg injuries have made that an impossible dream. But you need to be prepared for...

    Good comeback to the bank

Similar thing happened to my elderly mother. I called the bank and there was no hesitation in providing a credit for the charges.

800Wh battery available in Canada now...

Anecdotal, non-scientific comment: I am of the opinion that I do see a difference on my longer rides with the 625 on my new bike. My remaining charge levels are such that I am charging less often. With the 500 - I rarely left the house without a full charge. Both bikes (Giant Fathom HT and...

Winter Biking Advice From A Minnesotan

On a full suspension MTB with a dropper seat post ....nope. Poor choice of words on my behalf when I referred to it as a fender - it's not, it's a mud/splash guard,

Winter Biking Advice From A Minnesotan

Another piece of winter gear for my MTB, already had one on the front. I may add some plastic a bit lower too, to protect the area around the chainstay linkeages. I've an old mouse pad that would work and I can probably just rivet it onto the fender.
