    DIY without the DIY

The best way to understand your riding and your battery is with an accumulating watt hour meter. What it does is calculated the watts you are drawing, as you ride, and total them on a display somewhere. You can ride slower to extend range. If you know what the battery is doing, you...

    DIY without the DIY

Watts are right now, the power draw. Watt hours are capacity. If you draw 500 watts from a 500 watt hour battery it will last one hour. At 250 watts, two hours. It's like gallons of gas, a capacity. Trying to draw 1500 watts from a 500 watt hour battery, it would last 20 minutes. The watt hour...

    DIY without the DIY

I think California makes any manufacturer certify the watts of an ebike next year. Since the limit is 750, you wouldn't want to go over that number, but who knows what compliance will be. In Utah they specify output power, so anything around 1000 on the battery watt meter would be close...

Battery Blocs - - Shawn McCarty

Thomas, You have any idea if the Maker Battery will continue? I'm OK with what Titan is doing, just making RC batteries from 18650 cells in a shrink. I got used to just connecting LiPo and charging them with the 6s limit. Probably makes 12s the limit the way I configured the packs...

    DIY without the DIY

I don't know which battery cradle you have, for the Shark. I have the earliest, from a year ago. It is not a good design. I always use two bungees, just to get a lot of tension between battery and cradle. It's a known problem for the pack, whoever makes it. I watched a video of another...

    Replacement Battery

A conversion bike is going to have two wires coming from the motor, and you can attach any battery. Bikes with very refined frames and motors have much more complicated mounts and, generally, connectors. It's like camera batteries, except that there are 'aftermarket' batteries made to...

Battery Blocs - - Shawn McCarty

I searched for any references to this on EBR and couldn’t find any. The product is interesting and the inventor is very dedicated. Most flashlights have springs that keep the battery connected to the lamp. After a few years, the connection can go bad and the light can fade, or go out...

    Replacement Battery

No. Won't fit and other issues. Haibike is proprietary, not open, system.

48v or 52v battery for current BBSHD builds

Maybe people will just accept that high watts really are motorcycles, and accept that structure. If you want high power, on the street, it's called a Zero.

48v or 52v battery for current BBSHD builds

Hi, I use some high amperage displays I get on Amazon for watts and watt hours. That's set up. I bought a Bluetooth setup for the GM MP5, but it's been kind of a bust. For most of my riding, where the road is smooth enough, the speed control works of. There are things that should be...

48v or 52v battery for current BBSHD builds

I love two of my DIY bikes. I love the motor on the third, the Mac, but the frame is wrong and there's no front suspension. I used to want a Haibike, but I won't go along with the small and proprietary battery. People should argue about battery safety, but let's face it. You can weld a...

48v or 52v battery for current BBSHD builds

@Chris Head mentioned there is voltage conditioning on their new line of manufactured bikes. Somewhere in the long interview with Court. You see these modules on Ebay that can convert any voltage to another voltage. You need two elements to reduce up and down to a voltage, I guess...

    Pre-Builts with mid-drives comparable to a BBSHD

I'm not sure. The Luna Grit is a KHS 220, I think, and that is available in a Medium. They convert the large and Xlarge apparently. You could ask. Bigger frames have more room for components. If you have 'normal' hills the BBSHD is overkill. It's an expensive motor, the bulletproof...

Selling E-Bike Tuning Kits; Implications & Legalities

We've been given several reasons for why the NY state revisions didn't pass. This seems like a legitimate concern for a big city where vendors are using ebikes in somewhat reckless ways. What role is Bosch playing in all of this? The most popular DIY mid-drive is the BBSHD. Admittedly, it...

    New manufacturer? FLX

Google Flux. There was a Kickstarter. Big sales. Lots of reviews. One here ~ last spring Is it officially FLX?

Netherlands sells more ebike than old school

I have a feeling that if Walmart could sell a decent ebike for about $450 (basic hub, basic cells in a small pack) US people might buy more ebikes than bikes. Why? Just because it is a much better experience for the poor slobs who buy basic bikes and then never ride them. Walmart or direct...

    How does torque sensing work?

The motor output is variable. In theory you can pedal the exact amount you want, and then adjust the motor for exactly the amount of power you want. This is basically what a good throttle does. You set it where you want. You pedal what you want. A cadence sensor knows you are moving the pedals...

    Question for experienced builders: wattage

They could tell you if it is possible to change the settings in the controller. There is a forum here, or use the customer service email on the website. What I can say is the motor is set up for 15 amps. Given the 48 volt battery, that is about 750 watts. It is also set up to 20 amps max...

    Question for experienced builders: wattage

Yes for DIY, depending on the setup. Generally you set the maximum amps so multiply battery voltage times amps for maximum watts. What motor ? California will label all manufactured bikes with max watts in 2017, it seems. No googling then.
