    New Specialized Turbo Models

Had the Turbo X been available when I bought mine I would have seriously considered it. I love road bikes. I love stiff road bikes, steel tourers, the whole gamut. But the Turbo is SO stinking stiff it is bone rattling. A lot of improvement since I installed a Thudbuster ST, but that allow...

    Maximum Weight

I am over the limit on the Turbo. The limit is like 295, but that includes the weight of the bike, so it is closer to 240. I'm 260. That said, I have ridden it with water, extra battery, probably a 15 or 20 lb load + me and not seen any performance degradation. I just know that it is a risk...

Will your child (or grandchild) have the same opportunity?

Trails have been built with all sorts of money. Many by government, both Federal and Local. Here in Cincinnati, the city has invested heavily in bike infrastructure. Which is open to ebikes, I might add. Similarly, we have some great rail trails in Ohio, the Little Miami Scenic trail being...

Stromer ST1 Review - The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

BlueBill - the Stromer uses a freewheel and not a cassette (free hub). In that regard, your options for 9 or 10 speeds is limited. The old standard was a freewheel, where hub components were in the freewheel itself. Most bikes today use a cassette, which is just a set of cogs with no hub...

    New Specialized Turbo Models

Didn't get a ton from the GoSwiss site. The motor is likely modified from their stock product. The one item I did uncover was that the battery can be reset by holding the power button 8 seconds. Wonder if that resets the odometer and what not. Might try later today on my spare battery.

    New Specialized Turbo Models

Are now posted on the US web site. Looks like two new models, the Turbo and the Turbo X. Similar to the Turbo S but with following changes I can see: - SRAM X7 drivetrain vs. X0 - Magua Formula C1 vs R1 brakes - 460 wh battery vs. 506 wh - Motor is actually listed now: G45c X12 vs. ASBC X12...

    Brake Upgrade

86 - the pads can make a difference. Most disc brakes are shipped from the factory with organic pads. You could replace them with sintered pads, at the cost of more noise. The sintered pads will wear better, stop quicker, but also be (possibly much) louder. That said, it is hard to know...

Will your child (or grandchild) have the same opportunity?

Dash, I think everyone here agrees that trail use rights are important to e-bikers and that people that share Van Abel's views are misguided. I don't, however, believe that non-profits and government are inherent evils in the conservation legacy. The Pacific Crest Trail/John Muir Trail is one...

    Gears and Shifting Video?

Kaldeem, you hit on a couple of topics worth discussing in your post. First, many consumer level bikes (that aren't MTBs) are not geared low enough for hilly areas. A wide gear range is an expensive thing, so many manufacturers skimp on the low end. Second, if you are dropping the chain...

Will your child (or grandchild) have the same opportunity?

Dash, I don't understand what your proposal is. It sounds like you are advocating private control of what are now public lands and right of ways. I fail to see how this benefits any recreational goal. Recreation is about the least profitable use of land. It is a key driver for the nearly 115...

    Gears and Shifting Video?

There is a couple of ways to think about how gears work. I'll try to describe the practical use. Gears take your input - pedaling the crank - and translate that into some level of mechanical advantage in propelling the rear wheel. The easier the pedaling gear, the lower the mechanical...

    iZip E3 Peak Rear Brake

I have never seen adjustable hydraulics. Since I don't have a Peak I went and looked at the Tektro manual. No adjustment. They are like all hydros I have seen where you center the caliper and they are self adjusting. There are only so many options: 1. They need bled because air is in...

    iZip E3 Peak Rear Brake

Humanities: those are mechanical discs. The Peak has hydraulic. Different animal. No cable, no pad adjustment.

    iZip E3 Peak Rear Brake

Those brakes are not undersized in any way. While it could be a bunch of things, it sounds like they need bled. Mushy hydraulic brakes are usually air in the system. When you say the shop adjusted them - what did they do. Most hydraulics have self adjusting pads. Maybe buy a service kit and...

    An E-bike newbie

Dragon rider: the first thought that comes to mind are the Pedegos. Mainly because they are just big bikes and have a comfort riding style. The interceptor in particular has a large beefy frame. I sure others have ideas, but the Pedegos were my first thought.

All new BH 2015 models line up.

Brambor - did you look at this catalog? They have an EVO Snow, with front and rear motors for commuting in snow. Appear the tires may be studded as well.

Speed Hack - no more limited by 27MPH cutoff ??

Of course, you can always find more speed with a larger chainring. :)

Speed Hack - no more limited by 27MPH cutoff ??

That's fair, Bike_On. I was thinking of a generic hub motor set up. High end Opti's are in a class by themselves. But even that shows the added engineering and expense for those higher speeds. I guess my argument after reconsideration would be: "The practicality of a 35 mph bike by simply...

Speed Hack - no more limited by 27MPH cutoff ??

If you want to actually calculate some scenarios you can here: http://www.kreuzotter.de/english/espeed.htm I've posted this before, and it is useful. For example, a 5'10", 180 lb rider on a MTB requires about 89 watts to maintain 12.5 mph on flat. The same rider requires 556 watts to maintain...

    Bosch Nyon

For comparison, an iPhone 5 has a 5.45 watt hour battery. I know it will run 2.5 to 3 hrs if I use a GPS cycling app + playing podcasts. Assuming Nyon is similar, that is about 1% or 2% of the battery over a full discharge ride.
