Specialized Turbo Vado SL: An Incredible E-Bike (User Club)

Did everyone get an email from Specialized about updates to Turbo e-bikes? The email is very vague about the effect of the update for TCU-equipped models. Has anyone done the update and noticed any differences, good or bad?

I probably don’t have enough strength to create put the system under “heavy load”.

No. Shimano HG (Hyperglide) is designed so that the chain climbs smoothly up the sprockets while in continuous motion. It has worked that way since its introduction in 1989! See https://konstantin.shemyak.com/cycling/HG/hyperglide.html

Two pairs of shoes I have bought in the last year (Scott and Shimano) have loops of elastic on the tongue to secure excess laces. I haven't used the loops as I am used to tying the laces with a double knot to minimise the excess and keep them secure.

Sounds like a fault to me. I shift my Vado SL without pausing, as you should, and generally without even easing pressure on the pedals. It always changes smoothly and no different to Shimano HG on regular bikes. 2022 models have SRAM gears but I don’t know what they are like.

Specialized Turbo Vado SL: An Incredible E-Bike (User Club)

This seems to be the only Vado SL available in Australia. It is an unusual combo - step-through in XL. When I bought mine last September, there were only 2 listed (non step-through) both size L, which was what I wanted. I don’t think any new ones have arrived in Australia in the last 6 months.

We have added a Trek Verve+ 2 to our bike collection for my wife. We gave up waiting for the Vado SL 5.0 EQ which had been on order for 4 months. Multiple promised delivery dates came and went and then they weren’t even able to estimate when it might arrive. Buying the Trek was pretty much a...

Does anyone know the reason the chainwheel doesn‘t turn backwards with the cranks on many e-bikes? Just curious.

Can you just spin the back wheel backwards when on the work stand to pull the chain through. That will turn some parts of the motor backwards as well, but it is just the same as wheeling the bike backwards.

Brought a new Vado 5.0 home today!

I like the Azur Orbit bar-end mirror. It has good adjustment and doesn’t vibrate when riding. I think Azur is an Australian company so I don’t know if the same mirror is available in other counties.

Yes, Stefan, there are some good online shops which are happy to send things to Australia and the shipping cost is usually not too expensive. Most of the panniers sold in shops here are pretty basic, for example not having fittings which latch onto the rack.

Someone was asking about panniers for the rack on the Vado SL EQ. I have been using Vaude panniers which have very flexible options for securing them at the top and lower down. The top clips latch on securely and delatch when the handle is pulled. The lower arm can be moved to any position...

I have my former road touring bike (Kona Sutra 2013) dedicated to Fulgaz on a Kickr Core. Its last major outing was in 2018 on a 7 week tour in Switzerland, Austria and Germany.

In early December 2021, I filmed a couple of rides on my Specialized Turbo Vado SL for the FulGaz virtual cycling app in the Margaret River region of Western Australia. Both of the rides, linked below, are a mixture of gravel rail trail and quiet rural roads though eucalyptus bushland, farmland...

Specialized Turbo Vado SL: An Incredible E-Bike (User Club)

Hi Stefan. I joined the forum a few weeks ago and posted then. I met another person recently with a Vado SL Stepthrough and I know 3 people with Creo SL’s. However, there have been hardly any SL bikes available to buy in the last 6 months. You might be interested to know I filmed two rides...

I will try the 2-way feature on my next ride, but I don’t think it will be any great advantage My previous bike - Giant Toughroad SLR2 - had more basic Shimano shifters. My wife’s 5.0 which is on order will have SRAM gears.
