Another one to look at for road riding that just came out is the Vee Tire Zig Zag. Looks like a good amount of tread between the street and the tube.

Unless you can get that price well below $1000, I wouldn't touch it for the reasons already mentioned. If you have to replace the battery, expect to pay upwards of $500.

Ditto on the Five Ten Freerider shoes. I've got the canvas ones and they do a fantastic job of keeping my feet from slipping off the pedals in wet weather. Sturdy shoe that holds up well, comfortable for riding and breathe well so your feet don't get hot.
