Known Issues & Problems with Orbea Products + Help, Solutions & Fixes

The instructions, indeed, are really not clear. Somehow I figured it out anyway and have been using the level 0 when I didn't want any assist. That sensation of drag, IMHO, is a kind of physical illusion from transitioning to a lower (or no) level of assist. Like losing a tailwind. The first...

    Orbea Gain variants question

The more I've thought about this, the more I think the way to do it is with a 3d printed adapter that mounts on the stem plug. If I get it working, I'll make the plans available for anyone to use.

    Orbea Gain variants question

Turns out, it's called iWoc Trio rather than iWoc 5. Link here. I was going to order it through the bike shop where I got my Gain. I don't believe those give you any control, they just display status. It's also a shame they made them ANT+ instead of BTLE, since the x35 setup in the original...

    Orbea Gain variants question

I've been looking into putting an iwoc 5 on my Gain D40. Based on the specs, the interior diameter of the controller is too small to fit onto any drop-bar style handlebars I've seen, and it's a fixed ring -- meaning the controller is an unbroken piece that has to be slid onto the bars rather...

Watt hours per mile - road ebikes

Yeah, I'm baffled by it. I have one ride where the reported elevation gain and what I actually did are not very far apart, and the max grade is on the money. Distance and speed agree closely with my bike computer on all rides, and of course cadence is exactly what you report. When I mentioned...

Watt hours per mile - road ebikes

I honestly don’t know what’s going on with with the listed grades. The 30% is, in reality, something like 12-15% and about 20’ long, at least if Strava’s elevation maps are to be believed.

Watt hours per mile - road ebikes

I've also got an Orbea gain. It's the cheapest aluminum frame version and weighs about 38 pounds on its own, plus I am a significantly heavier rider than Jaxx at 270 pounds (losing a big chunk of that is the reason I got this bike!) I did this ride last night. A couple of notes about the data...

The drilling pins comment was just mordant humor on my part. I stuck the bike on my stand today and pretty quickly got the limit dialed in. The real proof, of course, will be riding it!

I got plucky and decided to take the train to San Bruno and ride the bike home. I took the simplest route home -- Westborough to Junipero Serra then up King. It was easy until I got to King. King is not easy. It's hard to get a reliable number, but it has grades between 9% and 14%. My guess is...

https://www.strava.com/activities/2788520230 First ride on my own personal Gain (the D40), and while I certainly wouldn’t complain about having the lighter carbon frame, this is a perfectly acceptable compromise since I didn’t want to spend a ton of money on a bike right now, but I really...

ebikemotion app is doubling the rpm's and vertical feet

I believe the recorded cadence is not the cranks but the rear hub. As for elevation gain, on the two rides I did, Wahoo, Strava, and the EBike app all agreed within a pretty typical margin of error.

Both the demo bike I rode and the new D40 I picked up today came configured with the ‘engine map’ set to 100% across the board and I was told my bike was configured as it had been at the factory. In other news: I had my dealer (Mike’s Bikes in Palo Alto) set it up tubeless and it was a good...

    An introduction from Pacifica, CA

I didn’t know until I moved here that I love the fog. It’s a good thing! The first year my wife and I lived in this house, the temperature broke 70 maybe for a single, non-contiguous week. The heater regularly ran most mornings all summer. Oh, when I take the bus home from a ride it goes...

It seriously beats just walking into my office in terms of staying active! The exact number is just a side effect of the year I did Team Bike Challenge with my cycling group. It is/was a team-based, month-long ‘race’. The year I participated it was for points, and the maximum points you could...

Looks like the alloy frame does not have specific routing for DI2. I think it’s mainly the seat post that needs special consideration there? I was told by the shop that the 2020 models all come with a new ebike control mechanism, and it’s likely to be retrofittable. So I guess, when I feel...

This has me pondering getting eTap on my Time Instinct bike and moving the wired DI2 over to the Gain (later on though), since my Time is a 2013 model with external cable routing. When they built it, my LBS did a great job doing an elegant DI2 install, but eTap would be even cleaner... And, of...

Indeed Mikes Bikes has closeouts on 2019 models. I carried them both around a bit in the store and the weight difference was ... well, much less significant than the price difference. So I’ve got a medium D40 on its way to me and should take possession either Wednesday or Thursday. Almost all...

At this point, I've ridden a couple thousand miles with the backpack full of stuff and I'm really used to it. Tried it with a pannier, but I didn't like the way it made the bike handle -- though I might feel differently about the Gain, since it's intrinsically more nimble than my Gestalt (which...

Yeah, I couldn't be happier about the mileage I got! And that was with backpack that had my laptop, a change of clothes and a jacket! Once I get one of my own, I'll try more challenging routes (IE, Skyline down to Woodside and into Redwood City, like this ride...

Yeah, I'm not crazy about the cadence thing, but for everything else that I want which it's doing, I'll adapt. When I first got my gravel bike (a Gestalt 3 from Marin), I was really surprised at how different it handled from my Time road bike -- which is the only road bike I'd owned to that...
