Anyone been "busted" riding a Class 3 bike?

Hey Rich. Yup. It is ongoing. Serious cognitive dissonance. Bike shops are selling Class 3 Ebikes in states where you can't lawfully ride them. It makes no sense and there is no resolution to the central questions. The choices in many states (including mine, Pennsylvania) seem to be: Don't...

Anyone been "busted" riding a Class 3 bike?

This discussion gets right to the heart of several questions I have on this subject. I have seen Class 3 ebikes sold in stores in my home state of Pennsylvania where I think it's unlawful drive them on the roads or on bike trails. I have read, (on this site) but cannot confirm, that hefty...

Speed Versus Newton Meters? I'll take Torque.

A 20mph Class 1 ebike is plenty of speed for me, plus you can ride it in places where many Class 2 or Class 3 bikes wouldn't be permitted. I personally don't need that extra 8 mph, but I would like as much torque as I could get for hills. I've noticed, however, that it's had to find a Class 1...

Class 1 Cannondale Tesoro or Kona Dew E wanted

Hello. I am looking for a Class 1 Cannondale Tesoro or Kona Dew E. I would take a large in the Tesoro or extra large in the Dew E. Thanks for your help.

Class 3 Bikes: What Do Manufacturers Know That We Don't Know?

BTW: When I was younger, some of my friends had "muscle cars" and I knew people that had speed machines like Corvettes and Porches. The speedometers on these vehicles would go WAY over 100 mph and the engines would probably go even faster, well above the highest posted speed limits. Nobody...

Class 3 Bikes: What Do Manufacturers Know That We Don't Know?

I agree. I understand why politicians might want bicycle speed limits on bike trails and even, perhaps, on highways. They have the right to legislate such things and, in most cases, I think, do so in good faith with public and individual safety as their goal. I don't agree that a bicycle with...

Thanks, Johnny. Your response was exactly what I was thinking. (But you expressed yourself much better than I did!)

Class 3 Bikes: What Do Manufacturers Know That We Don't Know?

Hey, A.D Yes, I think we do, at least insofar as we "need" any thread. Unless I missed something, I think I've read most of the threads on this issue. I tried to frame my question a little differently. Stay dry up there in Selinsgrove.

Class 3 Bikes: What Do Manufacturers Know That We Don't Know?

In the course of looking for a new ebike with an upright riding position, I discovered that most of the bike models on my short list are offered only as Class 3 machines. I also discovered that Class 3 ebikes are not permitted in my home state (PA). Furthermore, I discovered (and I think this...

Thanks, I-Jo. I never even thought about unpowered motor drag. I've always liked the idea of a...

Thanks, I-Jo. I never even thought about unpowered motor drag. I've always liked the idea of a Tesoro being able to do well on all kinds of surfaces, but they are all Class 3 machines now and it seems like they are prohibited on many trails. The Dew E reminds me a lot of the Tesoro and it is...

Leaning toward Kona Dew-e. Your experience

The Kona Dew E looks great. Did anybody ever A/B it against a Cannondale Tesoro? Would the Kona Dew E do well on rail trails, single tracks, and "tame" dirt roads? (as opposed to "crazy" dirt roads)

Kona Dew E DL For Rail Trails, Dirt Roads, and Gravel?

I was contemplating buying a Cannondale Tesoro because I wanted an ebike with an upright position. I was attracted to the Tesoro because it is billed as a bike that performs well on asphalt as well as dirt, gravel, etc. I discovered, however, that all Tesoros are Class 3 bikes now and as such...

Which Companies Make Multi Mode/ Switchable Class Mode Ebikes?

Thanks for that info, JR. $800 is a pretty big hit to take! When you say "Lancaster River Trail" do you mean the one that runs from Columbia to Bainbridge or the one that runs in Manor Township to Safe Harbor? Thanks.

Thanks so much for that information! Do you know what the penalty would have been if enforced? Thanks again.

Which Companies Make Multi Mode/ Switchable Class Mode Ebikes?

Thanks for that information! They are enforcing ebike laws in Central Pennsylvania? Class 3 ebikes are not allowed anywhere in the state? But bike shops are still selling them, right? Do you know of specific instances of enforcement/

Which Companies Make Multi Mode/ Switchable Class Mode Ebikes?

I just discovered an ebike manufactured in Canada by the Dost company. I saw one review on youtube and it was very positively reviewed. They also allow their ebikes to be programmed to adhere to Class 1, Class 2, or Class 3 guidelines.

Which Companies Make Multi Mode/ Switchable Class Mode Ebikes?

I have to check out those motors you've recommended. They sound like what I'm looking for. (particularly as I get older) In re National Parks: I think all Class 1 machines are approved (unless the supervisor of the park nixes them for some reason.) I assume that Class 3 bikes are banned, but...
