which front wheel/hub fits my needs/wants?

With any conversion be sure to match the spoke holes of the wheel & motor. 99.9% of bikes have 36 spokes, but the joey has 32.

which front wheel/hub fits my needs/wants?

airnimal.com joey has a tiny folding electric bike that fits in a suitcase. https://airnimal.co/products/joey/pendix-e-bike/ 24" tires. unfortunately battery is 300 wh. I've been thinking of buying their joey commute unpowered bike (29 lb) then maybe putting a front hub motor on it. The fork is...

which front wheel/hub fits my needs/wants?

Geared hub motors do not drag the motor rotor with your feet when the electricity is shut off. They have a one way clutch internally. I ride mine about 60% that way unless the headwind is over 12 mph. Exception, the famous grin mac one. Watch out for the "regeneration" feature. Grin left out...

Were You Moving Away From E-Bikes, What Traditional Bicycle Would You Buy?

I've been thinking about an airnimal joey. https://airnimal.co/products/joey/sport/#.Y9spZRzMJIc Folding, 24" wheels, lighter and more compact than a montegue which has 29" wheels. 11 speed 29 lb with 1.5" tires, disk brakes. Folded it might fit in a Greyhound bus overhead rack. I want to...

Considering A Windshield Or Fairing For Winter Riding

Below 10 deg F I wear 6 layers, Uvex safety glasses with side shields, and wrap the helmet vents with saran wrap . I wear a welders helmet liner for the ears. I wear farmer mittens, with oven mitts over them. I wear 2 layers socks, and combat boots. There are no windshield wipers or defroster...

    Build or buy?

20" and smaller wheel bikes are only for places with perfect pavement IMHO. After an adult has ridden through a pothole he/she did not see, the bike may be parked permanently. You can't spot holes if following a car through a traffic light, or if rain or snow covers the pavement. 24" up tires...

First (Slow) Blowout 5+ miles from Home

I installed a really good looking tire from a charity resale shop bike (bought for the crank arms) and got 37 miles before the sidewall blew out. 3" rip in the sidewall longitudinally. Had 40 lb groceries on the bike. Out beyond Tracfone range; had to push the bike 5 miles before a friend...

Is there a particular reason cargo bikes tend to be hub drive?

How far do your pedal your direct drive motor unpowered? I pedal my geared hub unpowered about 20 of the 30 miles of my weekly commute: unless there is a headwind >12 mph. If the throttle is taken out by rain, I pedal unpowered the whole distance.

    New to e-bikes

I had a entry level Shimano 6 speed axle break under my elephantine 180 lb. ~4000 miles. I had an entry level Shimano 7 speed come unscrewed and drop the balls on the road. No locknut on the race in this product. ~2000 miles. If you're going to ride 200 miles as the average kiddie bike is...

    Howdy

Welcome to the site & the hobby. My setup includes a high torque low speed geared hub motor, so I can carry 60 lb groceries or ag supplies up the 12% hills out near my summer property. I ride the flats, downhills, and low grades unpowered: unless the headwind is over 12 mph. 25 mph headwind can...

Still considering changing from Rad Rover (and Rad)

Lancaster County and other parts of Pennsylvania are notorious for ticketing class III bikes. Or any bike with a throttle. Watch rich suburbs with tiny police forces. Rich people pay their police to enforce victimless crimes to keep people out of their neighborhoods. Like the kid that was...

How to best connect thin yellow throttle wire to thick red controller wire?

If your thick yellow wire (.157 bullet conn) is the hot to the voltmeter and the source for the keyswitch out (probably the blue), you can connect it to the red wire of the alarm power output, instead of the red feed to the controller. Much more elegant. The alarm power out red is always hot...

    Wind?!

Since my commutes are based on my schedule, and not on the weather, I bought a 1300 w geared hub motor and an 840 wh battery. A 25 mph headwind pre-electricity in 9/18 ran my 3.7 hour trip to 6 hours at 4.3 mph. With that much power, I can make it into 25 mph headwind at 8 mph as normal. 30-35...

Step through frame - some wobble normal?

I have had step throughs since 2006. The current yuba bodaboda pictured in the avatar does not do it. The previous $200 Pacific Quantum did not do it: Kiddie quality bike. I carry up to 60 lb groceries in panniers or previously in steel baskets. My weight decreased from about 213 in 2008 to...

Biking to Work Isn’t Gaining Any Ground in the US

I walked to work to my last job. 2 miles from home. I was arrested and run through the national crime computer (~30 minute wait) 5 times in 8 years. I wore a uniform marked with the name of the employer. The policemen refused to recognize the name on the uniform as the one that was posted by...

Seeking opinion on Heybike Sola, or similar

DIrect drive motors can be used in steep hills, but use about 4 times as much electricity (watthours) grinding up them as a geared hub motor. Ie 1/4 the range as a geared hub on same route. I had one, parked it at 500 miles. I haven't looked up Heybike sofa, but I don't know of any packaged...

Seeking opinion on Heybike Sola, or similar

I ride geared hub motors. They are suitable for the rolling hills around here, 77 of them with 200' overall gain in 30 miles. They can overheat with 1000' gain in an hour, most probably would with 2000'. I burned a winding on an inadequate 350 w bafang hub motor last year. Didn't even reach...

    E-bikes that don't need a battery

I detest the noise of small gas motors. I'd rather have a solar panel that rolled up. The big flat glass panels are so unsuitable for vehicles that ride in the wind. Or a 20 lb wind turbine; there is a huge amount of wind these days where I live. Out west where I want to vacation, even...
