Why I won't buy another Rad Power bike (aka support your local bike shop)

Put away the pompoms, Alex. You have no idea what you're talking about.

We'll have to agree to disagree on that. It took a lot of doing to get here.

I just got word from Rad that they will be shipping me a replacement battery. So in the end, they did right. Thank you, Rad.

The way RAD works is you get a quote from the bike shop, send it off to RAD, they approve the quote, you go back to the bike shop to get the work done. Although I do understand why it is the way it is, it's a bit of a pain. And that's for stuff that they cover. They don't cover things like...

    Bike Lock for RadRover?

I use a U-lock around the wheel on one side, then through the wheel and bottom frame on the other, then a separate chain lock to lock the front wheel. Like so. For those wondering, that's a Kryptonite New York Standard U lock on the back with a Kryptonite keeper chain up front.

Useful, but doesn't really help with RAD asking you to install a new controller or reinstall a flange they made you take out because of an Error 30, though. Bottom line, you need to own a multi-meter and be handy to own a RAD -- that's been my takeaway from this thread. I don't own a...

Why I won't buy another Rad Power bike (aka support your local bike shop)

Thanks, @AHicks for proving my point. Buy from a local bike shop unless you're a bike mechanic. RAD should make that clearer on their website so prospective customers know what is expected of them.

Look at that reddit thread. That guy has a battery problem too and Rad is giving him the runaround. I'm glad that you have an understanding of testing electrical components but I do not. I don't think that should be a prerequisite to buying a bike.

@Alex M, the problem is that's how Rad chooses to troubleshoot. They throw parts and you (controllers, screens, etc) and expect them to fix the problem or burn out trying. In my case, it's pretty obvious that I have a dud battery, but they still sent me two screens, a second controller and...

Why I won't buy another Rad Power bike (aka support your local bike shop)

Looks like I'm not the only one having trouble with his Rad Power bike and the mail order nonsense. Reading those comments is very much at odds with the prevailing comments and reviews on this board (and my experience).

Why would I care? Isn't Rad Power a "store brand"? Can I find another shop selling it? At least with the Amego, I can take my bike into the shop if there's a problem.

Why I won't buy another Rad Power bike (aka support your local bike shop)

@Alex M Errrr.... I can buy a bike similar to my RadCity from at least two local bike stores I can think of at the same price. Amego is a subway ride (or long walk) away for me and they sell this https://www.amegoev.com/amego-amego-elevate.html?id=13806265 for $250 more. After my experience with...

Why I won't buy another Rad Power bike (aka support your local bike shop)

@Alex M, you don't need an extensive network if you buy from a local bike store, you just need your local. In my case, I'm walking distance to two bike shops that sell and service ebikes, and there are several others a subway ride or drive away. Mail order is good for lots of things, but bikes...

Why I won't buy another Rad Power bike (aka support your local bike shop)

Yup, I agree that their support is good. I have nothing but positive things to say about their attempts at good support. But when the problem isn't something that is easily photographed or videoed, or easily repaired by a layman, that's when you wish you had a local bike shop to take it to.

Why I won't buy another Rad Power bike (aka support your local bike shop)

I recently bought a RadCity, and you know what? I love it. It's my first electric bike, and I don't have a ton to compare it to, but I'm very happy with it. When it works. Unfortunately, it has problems, and some of those problems are compounded by the fact that Rad Power bikes are mail order...
