The transition

Cardboard waste is not a problem if you grow enough trees to keep up. It degrades in the soil, good mulch for the garden probably. Before plastic they used to put some wax coating on it, for potato chips, bread and the like, just a smear that degraded too. The only reason industry uses so much plastic is because it's cheaper and the Shale Gas liquids, which is mostly ethene, have no other use and are very cheap. We're talking about the foundations of capitalism here, the rational profit maximizer and all that.
