I am in the same age group and I am also looking for a good balance between comfort, autonomy and budget. For your size, I would look on the side of the Aventon or Ride1Up, good quality / price ratios. Maintenance remains basic (tires, brakes, chain), and a well-maintained battery lasts 3-5 years.

I had a similar problem after a cable repair, and it was a bad solder on one of the Hall sensor wires, barely visible. Even if everything seems OK, I would check each wire with a multimeter — sometimes it passes visually but not electrically.
