Apart from new brake pads, I'm using the brakes that came with the bike. They are "linear-pull" brakes, which can exert more force on the rims than caliper brakes (or so I read). Anyway, I've had no problems stopping with them, even from 40+ mph. I did not install the motor cutoff switches...
