Watching the peloton - Professional Road Racing thread 2026

Over here Flanders is the big Monument, the toughest of all, Milan San Remo the first each year, Roubaix the wildest and most popular among general public (so many crashes I guess, equivalent to the Grand National Horse Race I think for similar reasons.) Leige, for me, gets forgotten a bit, I think races like Strade Bianchi are stealing its thunder and finally Il Lombardia in the autumn the last big hurrah of the year.

Flanders traditionally is so hard to win, or used to be, Sean Kelly never won, despite winning all the other monuments multiple times. Came 2nd twice top 5 a few more times but never got there. Recently MVDP winning 3 in a row was remarkable, then Pog so this year is interesting as another head to head and after San Remo MVDP will be rearing to go. Been caught by the peloton last week almost on the line will grate with him, even with Philippson taking the sprint - and is Van Aert finally back looking good? Hope so, love his riding style.

Stomp if you have a vpn try SBS. Great coverage.
That's why I liken it more to the Daytona 500 than the Super Bowl. Dale Earnhardt won over 100 races and 7 championships, but it took 19 tries to win his only Daytona 500.

No VPN. I'm looking for post race videos.

Unfortunately we have zero clue about Nascar over here- probably as much knowledge as you have about the Grand National!

I always loved that old story of two touring cyclists meeting on a Himalayan pass, one Chinese the other English, neither speaking each others language then the Chinese cyclist grinned and scrawled 531 in the snow and both got on famously after that!

Dwars door Vlaanderen finale! Heartbreak again for Van Aert. Only consolation as I said above, is he is clearly on form. But this will hurt. Twice in a week caught just before the line.

Just watched the last 10 km or so. Was really hoping he'd pull it off.

I know these guys have a feel for how much energy they'll lose to the wind going solo vs. how much they'll need to win, but there are so many unknownables — including how good a guy like Ganna's feeling that day. Van Aert's miscalculated twice now this season, but not by much.

The interviewers at today's finish kept pestering him about how disappointed he must be — and he had to have been deep down, at least a little. But he kept insisting that he's happy with his riding so far this season, and I think he has every right to be given his last injury.

Can't wait to see how he does on the Tour of Flanders this Sunday!

Don't tell my wife, but I've become a big fan of Dutch sprinter and European Road Champion Lorena Wiebes, who just grabbed her 100th win at Gent–Wevelgem 2026.

She's a total animal on the bike but all sweetness and smiles and totally relaxed in front of the camera. Confident in her abilities but doesn't take herself too seriously. Intriguing combo in a 27 year-old woman.

Before the fireworks tomorrow caught the last 5Km of the GP Big Mig over in Navarre near the Basque Country and won for his third time by Basque rider Ion Izagirre at the ripe old age of 37, good on him! The last insanely steep climb was a three way battle between him, Quinn Simmons and a 20 year old French EF rider called Alex Baudin and Izagirre left both for dead on the climb. A real test for the puncheurs this race.

I'm out all day tomorrow so will try and catch a full replay of Flanders tomorrow night - great thing about living in UK is there is little chance I'll hear the result on the BBC news!! Just have to stay away from YouTube and this site.

I think it's fascinating that Remco decided in the end to race. Maybe listening to his old boss?!

Remco, Pog MVDP and Van Aert, all hungry, all, with the exception of Pog, with something to prove perhaps. Exciting line up.

It was fun to watch Igazirre drop the other 2 on the last climb and then slalom through the descent and city streets to the finish for his 3 or 4th victory in this race.

I was 37 exactly 40 years ago. Can't say that I remember much about it, but the idea of doing what he did at age 37 is mind-boggling.

Could be a PR component to this decision. Watched a slick official video of his last-minute prep for it yesterday. They could be trying to pump up his image after a less than stellar start to the season.

If so, he'd better win. And if his old boss is right about where his real strength lies, maybe he will.

I think Pogi would quite enjoy beating all 3 at their own one-day game in one fell swoop.

Tour of Flanders certainly didn't disappoint! One of the few times Pog actually looked tired at the finish. Afterward, he said that he's taking races one at a time but will give all 5 monuments a go. Views next week's Paris Rubaix as a paticularly hard race.

They all worked too damn hard when in that group with Pog! And why? Every gilt edged rider in the race was in that group, nobody in the remains of the peloton was a threat, if Pog wanted to keep away then let him drive it. Remco was stupid (again) by challenging Pog on one hill, it wiped him out and Pog, as he always does, just calmly kicked on and Remco had gone into red for rest of race he was what 20 seconds behind but could not get back on? It was clear after that that MVDP was constantly on the limit and was not going to be able to keep up once Pog punched again on the Oude Kwaremont.

Extraordinary to see the world's best strung out in solo TTs: Pog then MVDP then Remco then Van Aert like a bloody marathon!

So Pg has 2 from 2 of the monuments this year, 3 to go for grand slam. Roubaix next week is a different kind of brutal beast being mostly flat but the roughest unforgiving cobbles and raced at crazy speeds, crashes everywhere. Pity it's not looking likely to be wet where it turns into a slippery mud bath, ideal for outsiders and I love that.

Was just looking up statistics of total monuments won. Merckx head and shoulders above the rest at 19 wins, the next, The Lion of Flanders Roger De Vlaeminck on 11, then Pog (already) at 10- sorry now 11, and a cluster on 9 and 10. It's pretty clear now at age 26 Pog is a worthy comparison to Eddie Merckx and could one day equal or surpass him - both extraordinary individual riders who are the best of a generation.

Also - amazing to see the crowds, a million on the roads, the whole of Belgium out there to watch, almost their national day, particularly for the Flemish. Didn't even make the papers here!

Also x 2 - I'm not anti Pog, how could you be, he's not only extraordinary, but funny, likeable and carries his crown very lightly. No its just there is no secret in his tactics, what he will do is obvious so why not try and counter it by working more together to weaken him and make it harder for him rather then playing into his strengths. Wout, I thought for a while was playing the right game, hiding in the back of the group & not working, hoarding his strength, but alas it looks like he was not on a great day, or worse at 31, age is catching up with him. He'd been riding very well with those 2 second places, matching MVDP so I thought he might just be canny. Maybe he thought that too, but when the explosion came, like everyone else he couldn't hang on.

I didn't watch it, but it sounds like the same movie I would expect. Congrats to Tadej. Wout hasn't looked great this year, but hopefully he will be coming into form after this. Sepp Kuss didn't didn't look great at Paris-Nice either. Why is this important? Because the rider with the best chance to beat Tadej in a Grand Tour is Jonas, but he has to have a strong team with him. The way you beat Tadej is to make him work hard, then attack him over and over again on a major climb. If you let him dictate the race, he will win it. He's that good.

For Remco, sick of being caught out by other riders sudden gear shift acceleration on the mountain climbs in the early season stage races, so switches back to the king of one day classics, where it must really grate to get caught out by other riders (ie Pog) sudden gear shift acceleration on the steep hills!

Big question is will Jonas have enough left after the Giro?

Remco should stick to time trials and stay away from roundabouts.

Seriously. He's a world class talent that rides like a Cat 5.
That's what did for him in the Ronde; he had to show off/challenge Pog on a climb, half wheeling him then taking the lead and when the cobbles turned steep, Pog smoothly accelerated (as he does every.single.time.) and Remco was blown. Stupid. He showed over the next 20km as he trailed Pog & MVDP that he kept in touch, they were still in sight but he couldn't bridge, so he still had it in the legs and theoretically would have been there until at least the last time up the Kwaremont where finally MVDP was dropped. Even then as even Pog was tiring by that point, MVDP and Remco working together might have caught Pog in last 10k but who knows. I think MVDP did everything right bar perhaps working too much in the big group, but by being the sole survivor to Pog's attack, he was gone, shattered, you could see he was just hanging on, and easy to see one more attack on a climb and he'd lose contact which is what happened. Crossing line in second place he didn't even lift his head, totally gone, crushed and probably thinking he'll never beat Pog.

Interesting preview of the 6-day Itzulia Basque Country, which starts today with a brutal ITT around Bilbao. Pog and Jonas won't be there, but many other heavy hitters on the roster — many with important histories with this race.

No sign of it yet on HBO Max. Search "itzulia", not "cycling".
